Vacancies Available – Apply Within

Hospitality has always struggled to find skilled workers to fill vacant roles, and with the Covid-19 crisis, this became even more challenging. As the pandemic began spreading around the world many hotels converted to Managed Isolation Facilities to support Kiwi residents returning to NZ. As part of this transition process, most hotels had to make redundancies and those staff were forced to look for work in other industries. It was then that many discovered that other industries offer high wages, better hours and more staff benefits.

With the opening of the borders to Australia, hotels are now looking to slowly build staffing levels back up as demand for accommodation increases. The challenge now is enticing previous hospitality workers back into the industry.

So why would you want to work in hospitality?

• Before Covid-19, hospitality was one of the most secure industries to work in and will be again once the borders reopen.
• There are a variety of roles to work in including housekeeping, front office, food and beverage, reservations, conferencing, maintenance, and IT.
• Career advancement is encouraged within the industry with many hotel General Managers starting off in operational roles such as waiter, porter and kitchen hands.
• Many hospitality workers describe working as fun, happy and family orientated. There are also great perks like food and beverage tastings and overnight stays.
• No two days are ever the same. It doesn’t matter what area you work in, there will always be variety in your job because every day customers’ needs change.
• You can travel the world when you have experience in hospitality.
• Hospitality workers get some great benefits like meals on duty, uniform provided, and huge discounts from other tourism businesses.

So how can you get into hospitality?

There are a number of things you can do to get into hospitality including:

• Complete a training course at a reputable school specialising in Hospitality.
• Apply for a junior vacancy at a hotel and work your way up from there.
• Look out for apprenticeships at international hotel brands.
• Volunteer for some unpaid work experience for a week, and if you impress them they will keep you in mind for any future vacancies.

Hospitality can be long hours and hard work at times, however this is offset by working with great colleagues who enjoy working together and having fun.  If you have been thinking of starting a career in hospitality, then give it a go, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
